I need to get a field soil sampled so I am just going to us a hollow pipe and knock out the samples with a tap of a hammer.
Question is when I have gathered enough samples for that field do I need to mix up the samples together before sending them off or will I leave the samples in the cylinder shape and let the Lab mix them??

just get a spade out and cut out a profile of the topsoil and then get a knife and carefully remove a little groove up along the profile. Keep the groove consistant across the field and you will get better results than using those pipe funnel testers. top 4" is enough for grassland. have a good look at the soil while your at it. Lookout for the texture, worms, compaction, pans etc this is much more important than the results you will get back for soil analysis.
