Back in bike now at weekends after bad fall during icy period. Doing 15-20 miles which is good for me :-). I want to try Mountain Biking and wondering where to start. I would like to hire bike and go on an easy enough trail for starters. Don't have mountain bike myself.

Any recommendations or where to start?

    Thanks

    +1 for biking.ie

Based in Balinastoe near Djouce in the Wicklow hills, rent a bike at the trailhead car park and choose to go on your own or with a guided group.

Ballyhoura mountain bike trail in Limerick is the best in the country by far. Choice of 5 trails from 6km to 51km. Was out there at the weekend. Boardwalks are nice n dry.

For a first timer what is the best one to try Ticknock or Ballinastoe?

    Thanks

I wouldn't really recommend Ticknock for a first timer. It's quite narrow in places and a lot of sections have boulders on either side so you're ****ed if you crash. I went over the bars and separated my shoulder, spent over €500 on medical bills and new parts. If it wasn't for the boulders I'd say go for it, could just have been one of those days for me and everyone else who's started there might be grand. I understand it's not a beginner trail, but I've never seen purpose built trail side obstacles anywhere else...I'm also crap and in denial about everything, I seem to be the only one who doesn't like the boulders :pac:

boulders at the side of a trail are a stupid idea tbh, how wide is the trail at ticknock?

as for op, ballyhourras is amazing for beginners

Ballyhourra is a bit of a trek for a lad in Dublin though lads, he's only down the road from Ballinastoe, it's much handier for him to try it out and get a feel for it, it's a nice little track as well.
