Recently bought a small boat and have been using it for leisure. Ive been considering bringing a rod out with me the next trip just to try my hand at fishing as ive never done so before. The waters i'm referring to are the shannon river in the limerick/clare region including lough derg. I'd have no intention of killing/keeping anything that i happen to catch.
Just wondering do i need a license or permit to do this?
I know there are different licenses but are they for those who intend on keeping what they land? Personally i just want an excuse to sit out on the water a while longer!:)

    Yup
You need a Shannon fisheries license for the pleasure
Check the Ifi website for details...

Are you sure? after i posted my last comment i did some digging and this was the clearest information that I could find. It states that "no licence is needed for trout, pike and coarse fishing in the Republic of Ireland".....

Its not my area, but I don't think a permit applies to Lough Derg or the Lower Shannon. But to be 100% sure before you go, give the Shannon office of IFI a call on 061 300238
