    Hey Guys,

i was hoping for a bit of information for someone whom was in a similar scenario to myself and found success.

I am currently based in the west of ireland and seeking a job in retail management wherer i work currently, the avenues i am taking since Janruary are cpl.ie(best recruitement agency in ireland) and following up with phone calls. internet sites - jobrapido, fas, recruit ireland, jobs, jobsireland and local media.

these are obviously the most common forms of job seeking but there does not seem to be a whole look happening in the job sector in galway currently.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. :D

    cheers

just curious - who told you or where did you find out that cpl are the best recruitment agency in Ireland???
As far as recruitment agencies go, they are all pretty much as good/bad as each other and a lot depends on how much interest the agent you have been assigned to takes. Limiting yourself to one agency only is never a good idea. Sign up with as many as possible.

Also what about looking at aldi or Lidl - they each offer a formal qualification in retail management. Lidl currently have a vacancy for store managers in the North West and other locations - so if you were prepared to move you might have more options.

cheers ted, initially i was dealing with adecco and a couple others that i would contact every so often if something arose, just found cpl the most professional in every aspect, others seem to have the angle that one should sit tight and wait for a phone call if anything comes through the doors, and most gave the impression that they are are happy to twiddle their thumbs in the meantime.

aldi and lidl are good options if one wanted stupid hard for 70 hours a week for a decent wage.

galway is where i want to get back to though so re locating wouldn't be an option i am afraid.

    cheers for the post ted

well according to the lidl and aldi websites the hours are 45 hours a week, which in retail seems reasonable. I have a friend working as an assistant manager in aldi, and he does a standard 45 hour week (all be it he often works the evening shift until 10pm, but he only has to do 45 hours with the exception of busy times like christmas when he gets overtime).

To be fair, most retail jobs are not as well paid as management in other sectors, particularly without previous experience in management.

I think the best routes are either get a qualification yourself in your own time, get on board with a company like lidl or aldi or one of the other large retailers and get them to fund your studies, or just hope something comes up. But in the current situation we find ourselves, retail is one of the hardest hit and there are huge amounts of experienced retail managers working in general sales assistant roles, if they even have a job at all. Competition in that sector is particularly fierce.

i hear ya ted, different stores are run differently i guess. currently working a store manager for one of the biggest electrial retailers in the country in Mayo and will be starting a 55 mile commute in 5 weeks so may wait it out and see what comes back over the next 6 months or so.

its an employers market out there, thats for sure. ;)

best of luck with it anyway. when you say 55 mile commute, is that each way (110 miles total) or is that the entire amount? If its 110 that is hard going and it will take its toll on you. 55 total isn't too bad if the commute is straight forward. I do about that myself and the worst part is the traffic - that will drain you. My OH changed jobs and although is actually travelling the same distance, his commute time has doubled. He is finding it really hard to adjust and is totally wrecked by Friday.
