There was a poster in my local supermarket a couple of years ago, looking for info on squirrel sightings.
Talked to a lady doing a project on Pine Martens predating grey squirrels. Didn't believe it at the time, but looks like I was wrong.

And Foxes only kill male rabbits

Only ever seen a red squirrel and it was on the dodder
Let the pine martins kill as many greys as they want

Yes Johnny max as greys feed on the ground and are more likly to be caught by Pine marten and Reds feed from tree to tree and would spend most of there time in the canopys and are faster but will take a Red if it got one:D

Watching the programme on rte now. I think its ridiculous releasing greys back into the wild after they've trapped, why if there are reds in the area are they releasing their predators back out? science my arse.

Just after seen that myself taught it was the most ridiculous thing ever in line with animal rights style bullsh1t.
    Probably bordering on illegal.

    You'll never understand them
It's like them trappin a fox giving trouble and releasing it somewhere else to be trouble for someone else
Sometimes I wonder how people like that get paid

Afaik in England its now illegal to release any grey caught. Im all for research into wildlife but its already known the damaging greys do to reds and even song and game birds so releasing them is bull****.

I just watched the whole programme I thought it was very good as I am into programmes like this but for the life of me I know the Girl was trapping greys I dont understand why we are releasing a species not native to Ireland back into the wild and as quoted was just after having young I thought we are trying to rid this species to get our Reds back to high numbers as I said before start in the Pheonix Park trap and distroy greys.

Agree looked like a small nest box on the rear did you see her locking the trap out after she had finished I think she resets them again later that evening and checks them again next day early at dawn and so another day begins:D

No, they don't normally hide the comments, they just disable new comments after 24 hours which is fair enough.

This all old news. RTE and the Indo need to keep up. This is like a manufatured story with RTE and the Indo feeding off each other.

Surprised posters in this forum got suckered into rebroadcasting old rebroadcasts of old news. Dinosaur meat dressed as lamb.

The rise in the Red population also has something to do with the Red's being lighter, than the Grays, and can go out on the thinner branches to escape or jump to the next tree where the Martin can't get them.

I can't seem to find the threads we had on the go last year (2 years ago?) about the same topic (reds vs greys vs pine martens) Can anyone supply links?

Some sections of the meeja must be desperate, they're robbing 2 year old threads now not just current ones :)

In my opinion the Marten takes the Squirrel's at night when their resting, more so than in daylight whilst on the ground feeding! Maybe the Reds rest on thinner branches, and so less of them are taken! The Pine Marten also take roosting birds in the same manner!

We have had a surge in Pine martens around here in the last 10 years. They were a mythical creature in the 70's, but now I have seen them out in daylight and even had one about 10 or 20 feet away from me a couple of years ago. Swarming with them at night.
    Great to see IMHO.
