    Does anyone here use Plex?

i have a library of about 600 films streaming from a Synology NAS to my Samsung Smart TV, its great. Surprised its not mentioned more as its impressive, albeit not without its glitches.

I use XBMC instead, love it. This thread should probably be moved to the HTPC section.

I am anti Apple products, i doubt if anything to do with apple would allow me to stream every video i have on my nas and all the various formats to a smart tv and get all my IMDB stats etc with it.

I use it to stream from my Mac to ATV2 and love it. Much prefer it to XBMC.

Also it has had no problem playing any format I have thrown at it, to answer the grumpy anti Apple poster. :D

I wish there was a version for Sony Smart tvs as I have one in the bedroom. I've had to use Homestream which seems extremely flakey, constantly dropping its connection.

aye, apple is a friggin joke.

if you wanted all this stuff to play on an apple device you would end up with a cardiac arrest, several times over.

if you buy an apple device you are buying into owning everything and anything to do with the rip off world of the apple eco system., 1k euro for a 64gb iphone 5. nice

this is my plex, cant beat it. have a ds212+ nas storing m media.

Not really. If you have an ATV2 jailbroken you can pretty much stream any format you want to it. Jailbreaking takes a few minutes.

I've tried Plex and Boxee etc, but XBMC is miles ahead of the rest, truly multi-platform

dont know what an ATV2 is, probably for the better too :)

sounds like an all terrain vehicle, which i guess its not.

XBMC wont work on a tv? I want to use a media player on my tv along with a nas.

ATV2 is Apple TV, cheap and hackable

no idea, my samsung can play anything i got. the synology does transcoding as needed so dont need anything to do with apple.

but thanks for the tip off.

I have both a samsung tv and an ATV2 and have my streaming running on both.
The apps are better on the ATV2 than the samsung but I have never had any problem streaming with any apple product once you have a little bit of know how.

As for plex, while I agree it looks great I find it a bit sluggish in comaprison to XMBC and another one I use called TVMobili.

    Just my 2 cents worth..

So I take it you've not jailbroken your ATV2 then, what you waiting for?

I am running plex on my laptop, and it is fine. no stuttering or anything. It is perfect for me, i have a ds212+ nas but have not used plex on it as i believe it wont run well.

I can get a laptop like a xps m1330 for not much money and just use that to run plex off my nas and leave it turned on all the time. no biggie

I have plex streaming wirelessly from a Mac mini to my blu ray player. It stutters a lot with mkvs. It's the bog standard router from UPC that I have. Would I be better off buying my own router? I've found serviio to be better but still stutters on the HD files. Would love to get it sorted if anyone has any suggestions?

i have a billion 7800n router, wired with cat 6.

obviously not stuttering as its gb lan but i was using wireless on my tv for a while and dont remember it stuttering.

plex is abit of a resource hog, i dont know why they have atom versions are its clearly not cut for it.

i have connected my tv to router with wifi. watching walking dead episode 12 season 3. 720p .mkv working fine.

i got rid of the 'free' router i got with my internet package, pile of $hit most of them are.

the billion is a rock, never drops connection. 16mbs download speed on speed test. good for dsl.

you can alter the snr too for the billion (amongst other things) so as far as routers go its amongst the best.

I've Plex running on a Mac Mini linked into a QNAP TS-419P+ & a TS-869 and it works almost flawlessly although that's over a wired connection. I've used the Plex client on my iPad quite a bit as well though and it performs very well. I have very little of a bad nature to say about Plex. The new Sync feature is great too where you can download stuff to your iPad to watch offline. Couldn't be happier with it.

I tried plex. As others said seemed quite heavy on resources, and short of features.

I didn't have streaming issues with it over wifi. THe interface seemed sluggish though.
