Mate he's only two ! Not always getting stuck into a ditch might just mean that he's either too smart and know there nothing or he just don't have what it takes , hunting across a streem or river is a thing comes with age .

Your train a spaniel to hunt close and then expect him to hunt on his own away from you , if you were having problem with stopping him or him running on fair enough. But your not .

teach em to sit stay beside a small stream one ya could jump across and start with a few retrieves then move onto blinds when hes crossing over on the the get over command and hunting for blinds gradually increase the with of the stream until he will cross a big river and hunt bthe trick is to always have something there for him dead game etc success is key if he thinks there is always something in it for him he will be more inclined to hunt over there start small and bring em on from there do the same with the ditch and always put him back in where he came out he should realise thats where you want him. if its in em that is good luck with it

I have a 2 year old springer too and there's not a prayer of her going into a ditch unless she gets a strong scent. As soon as she does she will burst the cover out of it.

Did anything bad happen to your dog around water, electric fence etc? My bitch struggled once to get up out of the water after a retrieve so she got a bit of a fright. Took me a while to get her back in. I have a mate that pretends to throw empty shells across a drain or small river to get his dog to go across.

i hav springer he is 1 and half he hunting mad not to fond of cover either unless he picks up good scent n he wil go through the cover like a train he retrives land and water i do same only wit few little stones throw them across wall/ditch or stream ect and he.ll hunt away lik mad this was his first season very happy wiv him if i go out to knock crows or maggies and he see.s gun he.ll sit at door of his pen to get out cant wait for long summer of more training. for season coming....if u ask me they train themselves to hunt u jus need to show them commands ect....but there is fella in leitrim dat trains em 150 for a week i tink his name is givendale springer spaniels google it n see wat comes up.....

Well holy god please don't go throwin stones across streams teach him with blind retrieves and persavere with keeping him in what will ya do when there's no scent or wrong wind direction there are no such dogs that pass nothing but if your dog is in there is more chance of a find no shortcuts

I have a mate that trains gundogs here in Offaly. He trains a lot of peg dogs for the local syndicate. Think he charges €100 per week

Hi lads, thanks so much for all the advice. He will hunt hard thru any cover if he's got scent,he will tear thru cover better than my older which is only a year older but my older dog is more inclined to do what he's told and gets in most of the time when i tell him.He loves water too and is a great retiever.snipe02,thats some good advice,he loves retrieves so i'll try some more of that over the next few weeks as the evenings are getting longer..dont need an animal in heavy cover all the time just want him to do as he's told and hunt a bit away.
