    Hi all,

My husband is suffering really badly with his wisdom teeth as they need to be removed. Over the last few weeks they have really started to act up..
He has been to the denist quite a bit over the last few years and has been put on a waiting list for the extraction.. but this is a year ago ..

What is the most recent waiting time for this in the public system ?

Where is the dental hospital and is it a given he is on that waiting list ? we are in the south east ..

How much approx would a wisdom tooth removel cost to go private ? As I said he is in alot of pain and eating neurofin like it's going out of fashion ...

    Thanks for any info ..

No one here could know what waiting list you are on, you would have to ask the dentist or doctor you saw origionally... Find out who they sent your letter on to. You will only be on a waiting list for that clinic/hospital only, there is no central waiting list for multiple clinics/ hospitals.

Most public hospitals have a 2 year wait approx...

The dental hospitals are in cork and Dublin. I know nothing of cork, but it's a common misconception that the Dublin dental hospital is free for treatment. If you have a medical card, it is, but if you don't-you will pay as much as a private clinic (and still have to wait for the privilege). If you have private health insurance, you actually pay more than a private clinic as the Dublin dental hospital has no direct pay agreement with the medical insurers!!

It is approx €300 for a lower surgical wisdom tooth removal under local anaesthetic with a specialist, more with sedation. If impacted, it is covered by private medical insurance, consult and X-rays are payable though.

Are you medial card, medical insurance or fully private?

Thanks Oral Surgery for your detailed reply ...

We have a medical card and was hoping to go this route with the extraction , but I don't think he would be able to wait another year to get it removed.. but in the other hand can't really afford to go private..

Is there just one hospital that deals with public patients in Dublin?

He is back with the dentist today so hopefully he will get some more info as to where he he was referred to..

He could also have been referred to a maxillofacial dept in a public hospital, but since these guys also deal with head and neck cancer/ road traffic trauma, fights and fractures etc, you would be low down on their list of priorities, unfortunately....

Heading into the A & E unit of the dental hospital may not be a bad idea,
Can't see them not doing it either.

You will pay €100 euro for a prescription and then go on their waiting list.....

Well I imagine it would be a much shorter waiting list.

I understand it's a difficult time for people in Ireland financially,
    Especially for families.

But I know first how painful wisdom teeth can be, I needed three extracted at the one time as they where all paining me.
The pain was unbearable, I literally couldn't do anything.

I am lucky enough to work in a hospital in dublin and a maxillofacial surgeon sent me for scans in which he determined they had got to come out and could see I was a great deal of pain.

I had three wisdom teeth extracted wide awake under local,
something he said he had done before and praised me for it...

Long story short, the pain I went through in that hour procedure was nothing in the long run, when wisdom teeth get bad.. they get bad! My heart goes out to anyone who is suffering with them and I know first hand how bad it can get!

The last I heard was the wait for an assessment in the Dublin dental hospital was approximately 2 years and then you go onto the waiting list for treatment which is 6-12 months.....!!

I too know how bad wisdom teeth can be, I see people in pain/infection with them every day...

Just to point out, while having wisdom teeth removed under local is not fun, it certainly should not be painful as you describe.

I had mine removed up north if it is still costing you too much in the south . €230 for a lower impacted tooth and upper wisdom tooth. That included sedation and a check up after.

I was told by my dentist in donegal that that was the best route to go if you can as its cheaper but exactly the same level of service.
