I am looking at getting Car Hire Excess Insurance with Blue Insurance for a trip to the US. There's an option for Supplemental Liability Insurance. Do I need to get this as well or is that going over board.

    Cheers

check which state you're hiring from, they have different rules. Some (incl I think NY) cannot have a CDW excess. The Suppm Liab is for third party claims - most hire car insurances have limits on those.

this is written in the T&C for the car rental

    "Insurance Coverage
Collision damage waiver (CDW): (Includes Tax); Excess 0 USD
Theft waiver (TW): (Includes Tax); Excess 0 USD
Third party liability protection (TP): (Includes Tax)"

Does that mean I don't need the supplemental insurance

    The T&C's also state

"If you purchase the Excess Cover Insurance from a third party, the credit card holder will be required to present his/ her credit card at the rental desk in order for the car rental agent to authorize the deposit."

Does this mean I'm gonna have to have a load of money on my card that I won't be allowed touch

Establoish what the third party liability limit is and see if you are comfortable with it. If it is particularly low and you are reasonably rich (such that someone might sue you in excess of the policy) then consider buying it.

I would not have thought that they would put a hold on the card if the CDW was nil but I can't confirm - only they can.
