    It's a hp 620 on win 7
I've tried starting in safe mode but its not an option (f8)
I've tried with charger and without
When it starts it just goes to a blank screen or if you press escape you get this

Try the system diagnostics first. Then Bios set up and check that the hard drive is being seen.

F11 should restore the computer to it's original state. Do not do this If you have any data in any folder starting with 'My' i.e. My documents, My music etc. First back up that data to a USB stick or an external drive.

You can create a bootable USB stick with a basic Linux distro which will enable you to access the hard drive and copy the data to a USB stick.. See Yumi from pendrivelinux. It's very easy and there is a Windows version.

Once the data has been saved you can restore the laptop to it's original state.

As for anti virus, the vast majority of virus infections are caused by a combination of gross stupidity, naivety and belief that anti virus software gives you 100% protection no matter what you do.

re pressing F11 - only some manufacturers keep MyDocuments - treat it as if it wipes the drive

It's not gettting to windows so moving to laptops

but unplug all usb keys / devices / perihperals and eject CD's too

also go into bios (F10) and choose default / reset / factory settings (or whatever it's called)

    then try and boot

Are you pressing F8 continuously as soon as you power up?? See if you can borrow a Windows 7 disk and boot from it and just select repair my computer option, try a Knoppix or similiar boot up cd and see if it boots.

Try these links if you have no disk:

    Good luck

    It may not do anything, but it's worth a shot;
take out the battery and remove the charger cable.
    1. press the "on" (power) button 5 times
    2. plug the charger back in (leave the battery out)
    3. switch it on
    4. don't put battery in until Windows loads up, and then leave Windows on and battery in for an hour or two
