Advice on buying a couple of bikes

I'm looking to buy a couple of bikes for myself and my wife. They're primarily for recreational purposes to get us a bit fitter, so not looking for anything too expensive. As I'm buying two and have to get stuff like helmets as well, budget is maximum €400 for the two bikes, but preferably less if possible. We'd both prefer mountain bike style bikes, so any recommendations for both bikes and shops (online or handy for Dublin 15) that would fit the bill would be appreciated.

The other thing is we're not sure what size bikes we should be looking for. I'm 5'8" and my wife is 5'4", so an indication of sizes would also be appreciated.

    Thanks.

€400 is not enough for two bikes. Have a read of this recent thread on the subject.

Fair enough, but if €400 is all I can spend, what's the best I'm going to get for my money? I appreciate that it's not going to be the best gear available, but it's for moderate recreational use, not a daily commute.

Possibly the bike linked in the other thread would be okay but second hand will probably get you far better value. Stay away from cheap bikes with front suspension at all costs.
