Affording College and moving out

    Hi guys

I am a first year college student currently working a on a non stable part time job to pay my way (I am on full fees of around €5000 per year).

    I am 22, nearly going on 23.

I would love to finally be able to move out of the house but I am not sure how other people manage to do this.

Working part time I make around €160 a week, most of which goes towards college fees and food for the house.

Did any of you manage to fund both college and live away from parents, and if so how did you do it? I cannot imagine a way it would be possible for me. (certainly is not possible on my current wages but I can't think of any way it could be done). I really feel like I am missing out.

  • I did, but I got a loan. Is there anything like that you could get?

I also made some very good money giving grinds and English lessons to foreign students. Up to 100 euro a week. Even now, lots of parents are willing to pay a decent tutor to help their kids with the LC or whatever.

    Hi Izzy

I would not be comfortable taking out a loan for something non essential. Loans and debt crippled my families finances and I never wan't to make the same mistake they did.

Do most students who are living away from parents and attending college full time get a loan? I am not sure how they do it.

Most Northern Irish/UK students do, yeah. Most Irish students I knew seemed to be funded by their parents and/or part-time jobs.

Unfortunately, you can never have it all, unless your parents are wealthy. I had all the freedom I wanted in college, but am still paying back the loan and will be for the next 20 years!
