What do you do to 'cheer' yourself up?

In a bad mood for the last few days for no particular reason (which is not like me) and wondering what others do to get themselves back in good form.

    Exercise

    Spend time with my partner

    Hang out with good friends

Achieve something. Write/read/go to a group event

    +1 on the chocolate.;)

Cook a nice dinner. Or better still - bake

Go for a walk near the sea with the dog

Scientifically, if you veer towards things that fit your current mood, you become happier. So, if you're depressed, listen to the saddest music you can, so long as you like it. If you're angry, listen to vicious, angry music. It's sort of like the missing piece of the jigsaw to your brain. If you're sad, listening to happy music only amplifies what you're feeling, kind of contrasting the emotions.

When I'm sad, I listen to things like Brian Eno, The Antlers, Morphine, Squee, so on. When I'm angry, things like Altar of Plagues, Bad Command or Filename, The Body. Hearing something that suits my mood is cathartic, and catharsis is good. Same goes with movies.

Exercise. It releases lots of endorphins, so you automatically cheer up after a god work out. Or have sex, same result.

Thinking about going for a run later. Struggling to motivate myself though! And I generally love running.

By logging onto boards.ie and ridiculing other people's posts, especially when they're a part of pointless threads like this.

If you have a pet, spend the day with them. Nothing cheers me up more!

Watch classic episodes of the Simpsons!

Probably a weird one but I de-clutter and tidy my living space as much as possible, immediately makes me feel better!!

Also + 1 for exercise, nice healthy food, music, enjoying the rare sunshine, planning, writing a gratitude list and connecting with friends!

I suffer from depression and all of the above (particularly keeping to a 5 workout a week schedule) in regular amounts since January have really turned things around for me!

forgot to say, have a look through all of the YLYL threads on Cool Pics, Vids and Links as often as possible

    Dog cuddles!

It's a nice day, go out for a walk. It's the getting up to do it that is the worst part, once you're out in the fresh air you'll feel much better. Hope you feel better soon.

Internet shopping always cheers me up. Then there's the buzz a few days later when your new stuff arrives!! :D

Get into bed with a few beers, some popcorn, and watch some 80's movies.
Preferably ones that have aged badly and have a number of sequels like RoboCop, Gremlins, etc. watch them back to back.

Hmm, think I might have depression.

Sometimes I arrange to meet myself for a nice date. A drink, the pics or dinner. Nice.

Of course, getting stood up is not nice...

The sly "hand across the back of the seat trick" works all the time. But I'm always alert to it.

80's music or a glass of wine while watching endless episodes of "not going out" it cracks me up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 309 ✭✭tomboylady

It depends on how down I am. Listening to some music or going to the cinema usually works. Sometimes all it takes is a nap... Never underestimate the feeling of waking from a daytime nap totally refreshed.

With my undergrad thesis due date looming, I tend to get away from the computer and either:

take my dog for a walk.
Buy M&S cookies or something sweet.
Buy/read a newspaper and make some coffee.
    Put on the radio/ipod.
Crack open a beer (Don't drink much these days for medical reasons so :()
    Talk with friends.
Watch you've been framed (That show is classic ;))

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,568 ✭✭✭candy-gal1

A walk along the beach as the sea comes in and the sun is shining with your headphones on, shopping for cheap and cheerful bits and bobs then trying them all out, going to see a movie youve been looking forward to, and then maybe a nice briskish walk home after, then your favourite takeaway food, some sweeties that you used to have when you were a child like dib dabs etc, new Glee episode on TV and/or a night of True Blood boxsets :D:)

Nice long walk followed by a hot shower, favourite choccy bar (those big galaxy bars ftw) and it finish off by watching your favourite tv series boxset :)

I like to just stop sometimes, think about nothing and just stare at the sky, so peaceful and beautiful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 236 ✭✭jinxremoving

go for a really long walk and tire myself out,or swimming or hot yoga. some exercise really get the endorphins flowing. come home and take a relaxing bath and watch something good that i can get into a few episodes of, lately the x files

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,080 ✭✭✭✭Micky Dolenz

It depends. If I am feeling sorry for myself I normally just read or watch the news and think how lucky I am that I'm not in one of the stories.

If it's because an issue is getting to me, I plot and plan on how to handle it. Once I have completed that I am always happier.

Good idea for a thread! I had a tough few days myself and I'm trying to cheer myself up too! Watching top gear at te moment so that's a start :)

Been run down myself lately, but being a jerk instead of serious sam can block it out til the sun comes up again

And maybe that's what I'm dependant on, haven't seen it since October but seeing it peep though my window more gradually as it sets later and later is something I feel I was missing badly.. seasonal fatigue this late on

Catharsis and occasional matter over mind also but I've bn run down physically too, hard to pick up I think that nordic high may have contributed. Calm as it was it was an unshifting murk that chilled to the bone so think I need nourishment and sun right now

I like to walk past a field full of cows or sheep. They usually all stare at me which makes me feel like a celebrity.
