Are Direct Debits the banks responsibility?

    Here's a hypothetical situation, the Bank has authorised a Direct Debit on my account for somebody else and since then Direct Debits have been coming out of my account to pay this other person's utility bill.

    What sort of recourse could I potentially have in this possible situation? Who would be at fault, the Bank, the Utility company or both? And why would there not be security measures in place to avoid this from potentially happening?

    Direct Debit Guarantee - should be back in your account the same day.

    If you can prove that you didn't authorise the DDs to come out of your account then the money should be refunded as per the DD Guarantee Scheme
