Buying a small car for 1000ish euro

An easy task I thought. Looking for a car for the girlfriend. Between 998 to 1299cc - micra/polo/fiesta/clio/yaris are on the list. Budget is max 1300 but ideally around 1k.

Looked at two cars so far. A 00 micra yesterday was 100% on the test drive but had too much rust for our liking, beneath the window rubbers and the cross member just outside the boot catch was rotten. They didn't even bother to clean it. Dog hair, Ash in the ashtray etc. Not worth the 1150 they wanted.

Second car was a polo. Perfect on visual inpection apart from needing four new tyres. Very cheap too at 1000 euro. It was too good to be true. First gear caused the whole car to shake and was hard to engage. Gearstick was 'floppy'. EML light was on. Even more vibration on full lock. Steering rack problems I'd say.

Anyone see's anything nice in galway let me know.

    Thanks.

    I'm in the same boat.
My preference is a Micra and I hope not to pay more that a grand.
I live in County Galway but am prepared to travel for the right car.
    Suggestions welcome, thanks.

I ended up getting a 2000 1.0 polo in the end for 1200. Solid car, very clean, never crashed. It's just a very basic spec.
No electric windows or FA. You should get a decent micra for around a 1000 but my experience was they had high mileage or were a little rough/rusty around the edges.
I would consider 140k miles high for a small car like that. Check them thoroughly for rust at and under all the rubber seals.I wasn't too pushed on a particular model just kept trying different cars around 1.0 litre untill I found a good one. Paid 1100 for the polo.
All it need is a new electric mirror switch. Front discs and timing belt will need doing too in the next 6 months.

I think you'd need to stretch to 14/1500 to get a decent low mileage post '00 micra. http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4309015

It seemed as though you could get a better polo or clio for around a grand just because the micra's and yaris' are generally more reliable cars.
