Bibles in hotel rooms

Anyone find it strange that hotels still have bibles in hotel rooms?

Am in Belfast in a hotel and just spotted one beside the bed. Is it just a tradition/decoration or do some people expect or use them?

Stayed in a place down in cork recently and they had 5 or so books (novels etc) in each room which I thought was a good idea but I don't get why they would spend money on bibles instead.

    I think they are donated.

Lol, it actually says "placed by the gideons" on the front cover. Do they just send them to the hotel or does anyone know how it works?

I always found it annoying, but then modern hotel rooms are full of junk advertising things these days (Bob's Pizza, Harry's Bus Tours etc), so I suppose one more piece of junk advertising something is to be expected :P

AFAIK the Gideons are quite happy for you to take the bible away with you if you are so inclined :)

Like pay per view porn, it's just another in-room service I've not been tempted to indulge in, but others may proceed as they wish.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

I like it. It's free, i can take it or leave it,...i can even put my undies in the same drawer.

    I like books.

I draw dicks on the pages. I know it's childish but I just find it amusing to think of the kind of person that sits in their hotel room reading the bible finding them.

Gideons are ninjas, you never see them. My hobby is staying in hotels & trying to catch them in the act. No luck as yet though :(.

Not every hotel, er, bends down and opens its drawers to the Gideons:

I usually have a quick read of them. A book is a book.

I saw them once...in my own school, handing out copies of the New Testament when I was in 1st year. I thought my school was called a "community school" because it didn't endorse any religion - how wrong was I. :(

It's not something I would worry about because it's not forced upon me, but I do think it's strange. Hotels routinely remove books and other items left behind by guests during cleaning do why leave this book?

Hopefully it was the King James version at least - recommended by Richard Dawkins.

I dont have a bible of my own but when I come across it in hotels im actually glad of the opportunity to give it a read even if I am agnostic. I find it interesting to see what its all about.

It would be cool to carve out the shape of a rock hammer in the pages of one.

    I sign 'em.

Thanks for reading! Love, God x

One thing I do like about the Gideons is that their bibles are very well thought out. IIRC they have a list of moods at the front (Sad, hopeless, joyous etc) and then they give page references for suitable bible verses to, say, uplift you if you're feeling down. I think that's nice of them.

I often though there should be an atheist version of Gideons, placing "The God Delusion" in hotel rooms around the world.... who's with me?

But we aren't funded by deep-pocketed fundies. :(

I imagine they draft in the cleaners for this. Box of bibles on the cleaning trolley, if there's no bible there, in it goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,644 ✭✭✭✭lazygal

I wonder do other faiths ask them to be removed? Has anyone requested a bible free room?

....ponders this as going away this weekend........

I make my room a bible free room by sticking it outside the door.

Any Star Wars nerds on here? What's the Jedi equivalent of the Bible? I feel an idea coming on....

    That'd be the Jedi Code.
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.

    I prefer the Sith code
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
    Through passion, I gain strength.
    Through strength, I gain power.
    Through power, I gain victory.'
Through victory, my chains are broken.
    The Force shall free me.

I used to leaf through the old testament and find some random nonsense like how to treat mildew and put a dog ear on it. That or the story of Lot was a favorite one.

That always struck me as a far more accurate portrayal of reality. I never quite understood how it led to the dark side because it's pretty reasonable stuff. Or maybe I'm just a sith lord already and wouldn't realise it?

I just take 'em home with me so I always have a Bible to lend to Catholics. No way would I actually pay for one.

Roman Catholics aren't meant to use them as the Gideons are a sect onto themselves.

They're so small, how is anyone meant to find the space to highlight the inaccuracies and inconsistencies in them?

You should see the pocket editions they distribute in schools.
They get invited in give one to all the students talk about how the 'word of the Lord' can help teens and show of the marked passages and then the teachers tell the kids to keep them in their bags.
