Irish whiskey's future?

Sales of Irish whiskey are going through an impressive phase at the moment, but for how long can they continue? When one brand accounts for approx. 64% of sales, does that mean that it's limited, or maybe in it's infancy? I would love to see a day when we export 3bn euro worth, with 3-4000 jobs domestically, but is it possible? Many younger people might start off drinking whiskey, but once they acquire a taste, can we offer that much more?

I'd like to see Irish Whiskey industry copy Scotland and designate special whiskey regions i.e Islay, Speyside, etc. It would certainly help in the marketing of our whiskeys to tourists and abroad.

There are whiskey tours organized from abroad that cater for trips to the distilleries, but as is noted, they are few and far between. Bushmills,Middleton,Tullamore and Riverstown, and afaik,TD is still being distilled in Middleton until next year.

With three distilleries, you can buy whiskey from, can you really say there's geographic distinction in Irish Whiskey?

Also, none of the traditionally Dublin whiskeys are currently produced anywhere near there.

That is a very frustrating aspect, dublin was the epicentre of whiskey 100 years ago and now all thats left is a lousy show-and-tell.I can understand the logistical problems involved in venturing into this business, especially at this time, but danm it catch the wave and surf it.
Craft beer brewing might be successfull domestically, but it won't export, whereas whiskey certainly can.

There are a number of distilleries being set up/in the process of distilling first batches of whiskey. The boom is being cashed in on. The marketing of it possibly not quite so much.

One of the reasons for this thread was due to an article I read about Scotch, in which it was revealed that they export 5 billion pounds worth of whisky per year now, whereas according to bord bia the total amountof Irish alcohol exports came to 1.2 Bn euro, for the Republic.

Will the new start up companies just be cannibalized by the much larger ones, like what has happened to all our major whiskey distilleries?
