Last dog had to get put down by the vet before Christmas and we're now thinking of maybe getting a new one. We don't have much stock but as it is usually the brother farming on his own, a dog comes in handy at times.

It will probably do nothing most of the time other than lie around so I'm not needing a trials quality animal. Where is the best place to go looking for these? I usually look at the small ads in the back of the papers.

The dog will need to have a good temperment. Probably due to a lack of use I'd be concerned about it loosing its skills.

Is there much of a difference between keeping bitches and dogs and breeds such as kelpies and collies?

What price is a reasonable sheepdog these days? I just need something to round them up and get them out the gates. The fields are well structured so that once they are through the gate they normally only have the one direction to go between fields and/or crush.

Con mcgarry in tulsk in roscommon is your man, cattle dogs "well trained ones" are thin on the ground and good ones and i mean good ones "not the potential to be good ones that ever other lad will tell you about" are not cheap from E1500 up ive heard over 2k for top dogs. The good dogs are highly motivated and lack of work for them will drive them nuts "AND YOU" But that said so will a bad mannered/poor working dog i always found bitches more loyal but that was just me as for kelpies being there done that got the t shirt though as old boots they are but thick as to short planks compared to the border collie, but thats just my view,

I would recommend a bitch as well. I've always found them better workers and more inclined to listen to you. Having said that:
One of the best dogs I ever had was a pup that had been dumped on the side of the road and I took pity on him, brought him home and he joined in gathering cattle. When he grew fully he was great, so it is possible to be lucky.
