can Mark Strong do any wrong :P

Going by this piece of ****, yes.

Pretty much the most pointless, derivative and dull film I've seen recently (and wouldn't have seen it except someone at JDIFF thought it would be a nasty little surprise). Worthless.

Is there anything redeeming in it? I have tickets to the sky preview, but now....

Just out of this and while I kind of enjoyed it, it's not a good film but it's not quite as bad as I expected given some of the feedback. It is perhaps the most generic, run of the mill thriller in a long time and steals from pretty much every major crime picture of the past two decades. The script is meandering and the motivation behind the big mystery is amongst the dullest and most ludicrous I've seen. It's obvious how everything is going to play out and the great cast are wasted in roles that are directly out of the Generic direct to DVD Crime Thriller template. Strong, McAvoy, hell the entire cast look bored.

The action is rather well handled with a number of decent set pieces though like everything else in the film they feel like they were lifted from other films. The use of slow motion was stylistically quite pretty to look at but it had no place in the film, especially during the Auntie scene which was comical and not the least bit thrilling.

The film as a whole reminded me a lot of last years The Sweeney only without the somewhat interesting characters. There's not a whole lot to recommend about Welcome to the Punch. It's no offensively bad and taken for what it is, a direct to DVD thriller it's entertaining in that turn off your brain manner but as a cinema release with 4 star reviews from reputable sources behind it, it's quite the disappointment. Turn on the TV at 2am any day of the week and you'll find exactly the same film playing on at least one channel.
