I sampled a few of our own fields, I got the loan of the sampling tool, it's an inverted pyramid with a nozzle out of it. It only samples plugs of soil about 4".
It's important to get a representative sample of the field, so multiple sites should be sampled. I kept in from the headlands a bit and took multiple samples up through the field.

Ye can use anything to get the soil really, but a soil augar is the 'proper' tool for the job.

W pattern in a field, avoid uncommon areas to a field, like areas that have flooding, around thoughts, gateways, hedges etc.

Bag 'em up and send them off.
