Im looking to get a new car, I was wondering is there much difference in the price of running a 1.8 petrol to a 1.4 petrol. My insurance is about the same on the both cars and I was wondering would I be spending much more a week on the bigger engine. Thanks.

It really depends on the two cars you're comparing.

Really depends on the car but you won't see a huge increase in a1.8 if there the same car

    The BMW is the 1.8

Id say the cost of parts, suspension bits etc will be a good bit more on the bmw. Odd shortlist tbh,

Thanks, yeah its a bit odd, I was looking at a megane and in the garage they had the 316 within my price range, which has tempted me!

    What is your price range?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 scoreB

    Between €4,000 and €5,000

    The difference between a 1.8 and a 1.4 = 400cc.

    What did I win?

What sort of driving do you do? Much mileage?
Do you like driving, does the image mean much?

My process would be figure out the car I want then find it. Looking at what a particular dealer has to find what I want wouldn't be something I do.

Id be driving across the city to work every day from Artane to Milltown. Initially I was looking for a Corolla but they are hard to come across with decent milage, especally compared to the megane

    What year are both cars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

If you're thinking dependability I'd take a higher mileage corolla over a low mileage megane.

If I were you, I'd be looking at something like this

Or this (needs vrt but that'll only €340)

Be sure to check every electrical component on the megane if you decide on that. They suffer with niggly electrical problems with the windows and the likes. They are very comfortable to drive and mechanically reliable. You'll get about 34mpg driving around town.

They're also difficult to sell on which may or may not matter depending on how long you plan to keep it.

I wouldn't touch a Megane of that vintage, they can be a nightmare so I wouldn't take the chance. Regarding the BMW, its 10 years old so how reliable it is will depend on how it was maintained by previous owners. Again they can be trouble free but if something major goes wrong then you could be looking at big bills. I own a 3 Series and while most serviceable parts are more or less similarly priced to other makes, there are also alot of more complex bits that can potentially cost big bucks to fix.

If low cost of ownership is top of your priorities then I would skip both to be honest. Also don't just limit yourself to what one garage has, shop around for the right car.

While that shape Corolla has the potential to be a nice car, a poverty spec one like that has nothing going for it bar perceived reliability.

That doesn't even have side airbags or remote central locking, and I don't think it has a CD player either:eek:!

A Luna model with things like a/c, alloys etc would be worth considering, although I'd probably be looking at a 1.6 T3 or T Spirit from the UK, as the poverty spec Paddy spec cars are just nasty inside.

If the OP is willing to consider a 1.8, then a 1.6 Focus would fulfil his/her requirements far better than either a 1.4 Megane or a 316. It would be nearly as fast as a 316i, much more reliable than either, and will still be very good to drive. They're cheaper to run than both a Megane or 316 too, and will be far easier to sell on than the Renault.

From that comment it seems that you don't to know much about these cars. Even the basic Irish Terra Model came with remote central locking and a cd player. Ever see keys like this?:confused:Photo0604.jpg?t=1273506893

Tbh the reason I posted that car is because the op mentioned they were looking for a Corolla and the example I linked looks very clean and genuine imo. I wasn't thinking of spec tbh. As for your comment on percieved reliability, I can tell you that these are a well proven car and it's probably the most reliable car in it's class.

Also I wouldn't call the basic terra or ''paddy spec''as you like to call it, nasty inside. Yes it is very bland and a higher spec UK model would of course have a nicer interior, but the materials used even in the lower specs interior are still of high quality and are certainatly not nasty imo.

Corolla 97 model had remote locking on the 00 to 02 facelift, the 02 model didn't get remote locking till the 04 facelift.

    02 terra has
    Front airbags (no side)
    Central locking (not remote)
    Electric mirrors (not heated)
    CD player
    Abs and EBD
Coloured mirrors and handles (which the basic uk model didn't have)

Uk models didn't really have a nicer interior from 02 to 04 but most had more equipment,

I stand corrected on the Key, It was indeed on the terra facelifts that I seen it and made the assumption that they all came that way . Thanks for the info Colm and apologies to captinspeed:o

You should get a good second hand BMW for way less than 3,000. About 1,000 would be right for a 00 or 01 one, and they are virtually the same.

Why not get a 2.0 litre diesel, 2001 or 2000, for about 2k or 2.5k. It would be way cheaper to run.

Stay away from the Megane! I have a 03 model 1.3l and they are famous for trouble with the electric windows, cutting out from idling, a high pitched noise in the engine and other problems. That version of the Megane should be avoided at all costs. Ours has cost us a fortune, just can't afford to replace it at present. Do your homework online and you'll see what I'm talking about. I've been in an out of garages so much with mine. Oh and the boot also decides not to open at the worst moments.
