Hedgerows (Field walls) Knocking them down

I want to Knock a couple of field walls. But what is the right way of going about this. The walls are mud and stone type with hedging growing on them. Some of these walls are in disrepair with years, gone flat and have disappeared in parts but are still shown on the maps.
Ideally I`d like to knock the ones I want and if I have to replace them would it suffice to plant maybe the equivalent ground in trees to form a small wood??
Who do I need to speak to about this?

    Be careful.

talk to an advisor before you talk to the digger man. They could be preserved as ancient monuments.

Don't laugh - it has happened - I know only too well!

Also, if you are in AEOS/REPS, you probably can't interfere with them.

    This may help

Reading that landscape feature document from the link above and there is the following Q & A...

Q Do I now need approval to move a hedge?
A No, provided that an equivalent replacement hedge has been planted prior to
    removal.

There appears to be a fly in the ointment because if you read this link...
    http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/media/migration/ruralenvironment/environment/environmentalimpactassessment/EIASummaryInformationLeaflet170212.pdf

... u need to notify DAFM if your intention is to remove >500m of hedgerow.

My understanding of all this is.
You can move/ knock up to 500mts of hedgerow within an area not exceeding 5hectares provided u replace it with a hedge of equal length somewhere else and it is set before u remove what u want to.
Above this you have to get permission from dept.
