    Hey Guys,

My old car is beyond economical repair (and really wasn't up for the task I needed it for anyways!) so i need to get a new car.

I commute from Galway to Athlone (so pretty much motorway start to finish).

    I have €4-5K to spend.

I would like to keep the cc under 2001 as its a decent jump up in tax.

Not bothered about colour, alloys etc. Would like Cruise control

Ideally I would like to get a car with less than 100k miles (I know thats awkward with diesels though)

I have been looking for the last couple of weeks and I'm kind of edging towards something like a 1.9 Vectra. The odd one comes up that seems to be very good value. One sold just outside Athlone for €4100 (06 120k km) on tuesday which i though was good value (I missed it by a few hours!). There is a 07 on done deal today down in Kerry for €5k (07 low km) which also looks good value, but number one the number doesn't seem to work and two its a bit far to go for a car I think (long way to drive if its no good!)

I'm not in an absolute major panic to get a car, I share lifts with another guy at work and my GF is not working at the moment so she can do a decent amount of the karting around. But what is getting to me is the constant searching of done deal to make sure i dont miss anything!

    What would you suggest?

Have u considered a diesel toyota avensis, you would get a 05 ish model for your buget and they are very realable from what i hear

Maybe an A3, i just picked up a petrol 2004 model for my girlfriend with a full audi history for 4k and its very comfortable and its getting about 42mpg so im guessing the diesels are better mpg wise.

mazda 6, audi A4, skoda superb, VW golf/ passat, mitsubishi lancer... lots of options out there

as for mileage just try get something with a service history, 120k miles on a diesel with a good history isnt to bad for that year

This crowd in Ballybrit will fit cruise control to any VW, Audi, SEAT or Skoda for you. They use genuine parts. Never used them but it's a straight forward job.

Might open up more options for you.

i had a great time doing motorway commuting in a vectra last year, a 03 2.0 DTi (not to be confused with the 1.9CDTi)... the whole car only cost €2k, passed the NCT needing just a few bushings and headlight alignment. done around 10k miles in it trouble free then sold it. it had cruise control, aswell as auto wipers, auto dimming rear view and a gew goodies in sxi trim.
