I just sent our 2010 focus zetec (1.6) in for a service to a ford garage yesterday. The initial service was €157 (67.50 labour and 71.57 for oil, oil filter and air cleaners). The garage then called to say we needed two new front tyres (which we sort of knew) and new front brake pads. We were then charged a further €429 (€190 for two continental tyres, €75 for brake pads, €20 for fluid and filters and €89 labour +VAT). Total bill of €586. I dont know anything about cars but it struck me as expensive. What do you think?

Main dealers will always have higher labour rates than an independant garage. It is also always advised to ask a price for the work up front before they do the work and shopping around.

Also the dearest place to buy tyres imo is from a main dealer, they normally don't sell them in large numbers so don't buy them at bulk discount prices from a supplier like a tyre centre can. The main dealer will include their margin onto the price they charge you. If fact some dealers might even just get their local tyre centre to supply and fit them as they don't have the equipment so you end up paying the dealer as a middle man. You could have probably bought the tyres from a reputable tyre centre for alot less.
