CRV Mk1 (>01) vs Mk2 (02-06) opinions

    folks,

i'm just sounding out options for the replacement family car, and one of the contenders is the CRV. I've never been a huge fan of soft-roaders, but always had a soft spot for the original CRV.
Annual mileage is low, so it'll be a petrol model (don't think the Mk1 came with a derv option anyway), and it will also have to be automatic. Max budget is €4.5k
I had a 2l 00 Accord previously, and i think that engine is in later versions of the Mk1, so i'm aware its a bit thirsty, but how thirsty?
The Mk 2 looks ungainly and awkward to my eyes compared to its predecessor, but i guess its more modern and not as spartan as the original of the species.

We're not under pressure to purchase, so i've no problem wiating for the right one to come along.

    an example of each:
Mk1 (price is high, but just for example)

    Mk2

    Any owners opinons/impressions welcome

    thanks

The MK1's were bullet proof cars. My dad had a few of them. Great cars, but the MKII, although not as pretty, is a better car. It handles and drives better, has much better safety too if you are carting your family around.

All Auto CRV's will be thirsty, but probably no more than any auto soft roader with a 2.0 petrol in it. Diesels didnt appear until 2005 and command a premium. They will be manual only but we used to average 38mpg in our 2006 2.2 diesel that we sold on last year (Tax would be €950 now!)
