Why is Viagra blue?

Its not that I have a fascination with Viagra or the colour blue, its just that I looked up various leading drugs in tablet form and they all seem to have their own striking colour or combination of base colours. The less popular the drug the more diluted the colour at least til it gain popularity and its branded a more striking colour.

I know its an odd observation but I'm sure there's something to it.

    Any thoughts?

Because it has blue dye in it for marketing and identification purposes.

Every tablet has to be unique in some way so that they can be identified (should a patient arrive into healthcare without medical records or previous prescriptions and just say "I take these"). There's a book with pictures for pharmacists to use to id them then. Not sure if this applies to supplements and alternative health stuff as well.
Of course the companies are more than happy to facilitate this as it helps with their marketing and advertising. No idea if they actually invest in visual communication through tablet design though....
