Yes, don't do it. You would be varnishing onto a surface that is not wood. Is is essentially a tough plastic coating that has the appearance of wood and is pressed onto a MDF backing. I've never done it myself, but I could see varnish peeling / flaking being a serious issue, if you even managed to get it to adhere to the surface in the first place.
