The rear wheel on my mountain bike (old steel hack) keeps turning in towards the bottom bar every time I turn the pedal. The bolts or nuts seem tight. As it causes the tyre to rub off the bar for some reason the chain keeps derailing as a result of this. The part that holds both pedals is lose also so every time i turn the pedals the whole episode occurs i.e the wheel turns in towards rubbing of the bar and the chain derails so basically I cannot cycle at all on it The pedla holder thingy is lose in that you can move it from left to right but the bolts screwed in seem tight and not lose. Will I need a completely new wheel or derailer etc. Sorry for not knowing the technical terms for some of the parts mentioned but I am a complete nob when it comes to this.

    Dosen't sound good.

Is the wheel True (i.e. not buckled)? I suspect the answer is no. If you're not familiar with bike maintenance just bring it to a shop. If it's possible they will true it for 10 or 15 euro.

Sounds like your bottom bracket (the part you cannot see inside the frame that connects the left side pedal arms & right side chainset and allows you to spin your pedals) is shot and will need to be replaced. Again (sorry for the repetition) if you are not familiar with bike maintenance and don't have the requisite tools its a case of bringing it to the bike shop. This is more expensive.

I guess its a matter of getting a couple of quotes and deciding if the work is worth doing.

Sorry cannot be of any more help.

Thanks Konkers. I only paid 60 euro for it a couple of months ago so I will have to consider this when I bring it to the repair shop for a qoute i.e whether its worth gettin it fixed.
