    why??? why???

    tragic news from Scotland :(

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-21614304

Thousands of litres of whisky have been flushed down the drain by accident at a bottling plant in Dumbarton.

It is understood the mix-up happened at Chivas Brothers during the night shift on Tuesday while equipment was being cleaned.

Instead of draining away waste water, the workers on duty somehow flushed out thousands of litres of bulk whisky.

The smell was so strong that sewage workers reported it.

Chivas Brothers - which employs 600 workers at the plant and produces the world's second biggest-selling brand, Ballantine's - said it was investigating an accidental release of spirit.

A statement said: "We are currently investigating an accidental loss on the 26th of February at our Dumbarton site, where some spirit was released to the local water treatment plant.

"There has been no release of spirit to the River Leven or any other local water course. We have informed Scottish Water and all other relevant authorities."
    'Adverse impact'
A Scottish Water spokesman said: "Staff at our waste water treatment works were already aware of a problem and were working to identify the source when contacted by Chivas Brothers.

"Our trade effluent team have now visited the company to get an oversight into its failure investigation so that we can ensure all possible precautions are being taken to prevent a repeat.

"Discharging large volumes of alcohol into the sewer network can have an adverse impact on waste water treatment processes, particularly during dry, cold weather.

"We are continuing to closely monitor our Dumbarton waste water treatment works to ensure treatment has not been compromised

Any alcos on should avert their eyes. Ok? Right - all the kegs that come back from the Pubs unused, all the short dated kegs and all the mislabelled/dinged/vaguely suspect/tiny bit out of date kegs get dumped into the sewers/rivers as a pretty much daily event. That's thousands of liters of booze dumped daily. First time I was in Cork at a plant and watched them opening keg after keg after keg and pegging it into the Lee I was gobsmacked. The novelty wore off though, and then it was, ah, sure, meh. It's like everything, scarce some places, getting dumped in others.

No doubt the conspiracy theorists will be all over this, the global elite are attempting mind control by adulterating the water supply, those bastards

It's a sad day for the general public, but a blurry one for the homeless living in the sewers in Scotland.

Anything spelled "Whisky" is not the real thing, we just need to block exports from here of the real stuff so the greedy Scots don't drink all our supply.

I got a summer job in Guinness years ago and watched 2 hours of warm Carlsberg beer pour down the drain, while the mechanics fixed the problem. I remember being horrifed at first at the thought of it, but they weren't that bothered, cheap as pi$$ to make.

This, pretty much. I've seen millions, literally millions of "well known" chocolate bars dumped into bulk bags because a printer head on the labeller was a bit off, skips full of printer cartridges because the adhesive was a tad off on the sealing sticker, hundreds of tonnes of brand new premium car parts dumped because of a "strategy change", thousands of liters of paint skipped because one or two cans spilt, and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of food binned for various piddly reasons. Industrial waste is, like industrial production, mind-blowing in its scale. It's a bit of a sin, really, imo..

Imagine if it was dumped into the drinking water system somehow. Whiskey on tap in your home.
