Looking at 9pm news last night, Wed. I counted four reporters in Rome working on the news. What a waste of money. Our national broadcaster squandering money again. I think it's a disgrace and overkill but who decided to have so many RTE staff out there.

They could quite as easily interview an American reporter with NBC. But you will be told by the faithful on here that it is a momentous occasion, never before has Gods homie on earth stepped down etc. It's exciting times we live in eh? ;)

Why not? Sure it's a big story for those that watch it. Sure remember when Karol died? It went into overdrive!!!

What about the recent american elections, I thought we were the 51st state at one point, it was so overkill.

Personal bias aside - I do think that the story is big for large sections of the licence paying community. Four reporters might be too much - but most newspapers have a 'Rome' Corr (or did anyway!)

Well I am just after forking out €160 for a licence I could ill afford, we hear on a regular basis about the need for RTE staff to cut back due to finnancial budgets and yet when I saw Brian Dobson doing anchor from Rome and three other reporters there as well, Samantha Librari(unsure of spelling) but to quote from RTE website "She also loves to travel but despite the air miles she has clocked up, her favourite city in the world is still Dublin. " She got a few airmiles going to Romeand back courtesy of RTE !! Tony Connolly, and lastly the Religious correspondent Joe Little. Like Bertie spend spend spend!!!

The excuse "its big news" is all very well, but, he's already resigned, theres going to be a new one, why the need for FOUR journalists?

Maybe if we had 4 journalists covering things happening in the EU people might be slightly more informed. Who am I kidding, probably not.

What I don't get is why the Radio staff are out there. Sean O'Rourke etc. Was it really needed to send them?

Vincent Browne made the point last night that his show on TV3 is made up of himself and 2 staff while RTE's Primetime has a staff of 40.

I know you can't compare them directly but it does bring home how well resourced RTE is.

    I think RTE employs 2,000, TV3 employs 200.

I'm willing to bet Pat Kenny receives a few more bob than Vincent also

Wouldn't it be great if we could choose who our licence is paid to

And shouldn't we be thankful for that?

    V. Browne's show has a bunch of talking heads on it(I presume they get paid something), no investigative journalism at all, apart from reading the papers hastily at the end.

I like Browne, by the way, his show on Radio 1 years ago was the best radio going.

Bear in mind RTE's own brand of investigative journalism is something we could do without

Vincent Browne's show is a joke. Then again so is the Frontline

I worked on a event that BBC news were covering. they brought 9 staff and thats not including radio staff.

for live TV 4 people is not that many people.

It's newsworthy but RTE are overkilling with all the reporters. It's all about filling time by fabricating interests or adding hype to a story and getting to the ads. Well you could say that about all their current affairs program's.

It looks like it'll be the same story this week. Hourly updates on whether smoke has emerged and such. RTE news spent at least twenty minutes recycling the same questions in Rome last night. It appears the church is still running the country. I thought Brian Dobson was a fairly rational man so would be surprised if he's happy to be covering this in such depth.
