hi, Im interested in buying a car that is in Ireland but with a UK reg. It would be a private sale. Iv read the revenue website and I dont fully understand it. I was just looking for what paperwork I would need firtsly from the current owner and then to vrt the car.

    thanks

It needs to be said that selling a uk reg car with unpaid vrt in Ireland is illegal unless you're actually a garage.

There are a lot of chancers bringing in stuff which they won't stand over and selling from their house.

Thanks for that. Does that mean it is not possible to buy privately and VRT a car?

Its possible alright. You need the v5 cert for the car, and some proof that you transported it from outside the country in the last 30 days.
Some say any sort if made up invoice does the trick.

I'd have serious problems lining the pockets of people openly flouting the law though.

Alright but if he has had the car in the country the last few months does that mean when I go to VRT it I will face some penalty for him not declaring. Im just trying to figure whether the car is worth going to look at or not with the hassle involved. thanks again.

There's a reason he hasn't vrt'd it is how I'd look at it. Personally I skip ads from private sellers with yellow plates

You don't need proof of shipping just a recipet(some very bold boys make their own which can be hand written and must contain
    -sellers name
    -date of purchase
    -amount purchased for.

You are only liable for vrt from the date on the recipet not how long car has been in country..

Drive to the border, drive 10 foot past it and conduct sale, get receipt and return, all legal :D.

The V5 is a must, don't touch the car unless he has this, also check who is the owner on the V5 and contact them to make sure it's not stolen.

ok so if I got a receipt and the V5 form thats all that is needed from the current owner of the car.? also is the V5 the Uk version of our logbook.? Is it ok for me to post a link to the advert for the car in question, as somebody could have some info on it, or is it against the rules.?

Comes up as having been for sale in Antrim for £3295. If the vrt is €700 then why haven't they done it?

More than likely because he sells a lot of cars on the side and if he VRT'ed them all then Revenue would be onto him as you have to supply your PPS number when you register it. Anyone who imports more than a certain number of cars in a year would probably face investigation.
