What to do with Aviva shares?

    Hi All

I have Aviva shares that seem to be falling in value at the moment. I wanted to hold on to them till the 20th March (dividend date) but was thinking if they continue to decline at the current rate they will not be worth a lot anyways.

Would ye recommend selling before or after a dividend date?

    Thanks:)
    Barr

They've gone ex-div so if you sell them now you'll still get the dividend

OP is correct the shares go ex div on 20th March.

The 2012 results are announced on 7 March so there might be some movement in the share price then. I wouldn't sell them purely because they have dropped recently. If the dividend is cut however then it will probably fall further.

    Thanks Procyon

Would it be the 20th March they announce what the dividend will be or is it March 7th ?

It'll be on the 7th March when the value of the dividend is announced.

Sweet, not too long to wait. Hope it will be positive.

The share price seems to be recovering today so I might hang on and hope for the best.

Prior to a share going ex-div the quoted price tends to include the dividend, once the share goes ex-div you would expect to see the price fall to take into account that the share is now ex-div....

Took a right hammering this morning, down around 12% on the dividend cut news. Oversold maybe? An opportunity to buy low?

Dividend cut by 44%, share price down by 12.5% to 315. Not good. It should go up from here but it could be a long time before 400 is approached again.

I'm not going to sell my shares now but I'm starting to think some of the other insurers on the FTSE have better prospects.

Results today were well received. Share price up to 349p almost where it was when the thread was started. I still think it could be a while before it reaches 4 pounds again.

What a difference a year makes! Results today were very well received. Share price just over 500p.
