    Hi

    I'm going to do a J1 on my own and was wondering has anyone done one before on their own?

    Also, I haven't booked flights yet so I'm undecided where to go, any recommendations?

    Have you got the visa yet? The visa requires a sponsor, which pretty much obliges you to use some kind of agency.
    Obviously, if you have a visa sponsor, the rest is easy.

    Hi, no I don't hold the visa yet but I've applied and I will be doing my embassy appointment next month

    Surely you know where you're going at this stage? I'm going to San Francisco. I know of a few more going alone there too. It's not that uncommon
