Get in contact with the PE teachers in the school and see are the school registered and if not try to get them to register. From here IIRC they will be sent out literature regarding races. A PE teacher is necessary to get on board simply because to warrant going to competitions they need to be present at trainings and Races as a representative of the school

Half the battle with a school that doesnt have a background in athletics is getting someone on board within the system. It can take a lot of chasing up (often easier to have the kids try chase this up as the teacher to show the interest is not just that of a pushy parent)

Also try target lower key races as a way of promoting the success potential for the school of the sport. Our school started with me and two others medaling at west leinsters, leinsters and up and from there it gave us leverage to promote athletics to the point where we were sending 60 kids to Community school competitions and recording good medal hauls (mind you we had to take on alot of the coaching also so was alot of work involved). It left a legacy in the school that is still going thankfully

Schools love the prestige associated with success in sports and that can be key for getting things off the ground

As far as I know now the Irish schools comes under the umbrella of the AAI

I used to run xc for the secondary school I was thinking of approaching but it died off a few years back when one of the teachers retired.
I was hoping to have all the info I need before approaching the school. I still know 1 or 2 of the teachers.
See I'm also trying to give my own coaching experience a boost as I'm a little down the roster in my local club especially when it comes to the older athletes.

Good on ya. Hopefully the school should facilitate this. Let us know how you get on and how it develops.

If you don't get a reply, ring John Shields in the AAI Office; he's the schools co-ordinator.
