New Windows 8 install - sound problems

I think this is the right forum to ask in, did a search but couldn't see any similar threads; I just wanted to see if other people were having the same problems with Windows 8 Pro that I am.

Got the upgrade version for both my ultra-slow laptop and my nifty main computer. Now my laptop works very well while my PC is a mix of BSODs and seemingly unique 'quirks' that are starting to make me consider downgrading.

I suspected memory problems as the root cause of my BSODs, but memory diagnostics don't show up anything. While I'll run more intensive testing at the weekend, I wonder if you folks can help me rule out sound driver issues.

The onboard sound on my ASROCK M3N78D motherboard glitches every so often - despite updating the drivers. The front panel also doesn't automatically sense when I insert headphones any more, which is very, very inconvenient.

I thought this was a driver issue, so I whacked in a Creative Xi-Fi SB0460. Okay, an old card, but a nice one with its own front panel. Installed the Creative Win8 drivers and have the option to auto-mute speakers when headphones are plugged in.... but it just doesn't do anything.
    It also seems to glitch.

Did anyone else experience sound problems after upgrading, particularly if you have the same or similar hardware? Did you manage to get the issue fixed?

I haven't had this specific problem, but I did have problems with audio drivers on my laptop when I upgraded to Vista a few years ago. The audio played okay but would glitch periodically.

I eventually figured out this was due to the Wifi driver, which was occasionally locking out DPC interrupts. Back then, I used a tool called DPC Latency Checker to track it down.

Unfortunately, DPC Latency Checker isn't Windows 8 compatible (it runs but gives incorrect readings). There's another similar tool though which seems to work okay, so should be worth a try: LatencyMon.

Basically, you run it for a while in the background and let a couple of audio glitches happen. Then stop it, read its report, and it will hopefully highlight what drivers might be causing your issue. You disable those drivers to prove they are causing the interference, and if they are, you can decide whether to get newer drivers or replace the underlying hardware.

As a first step, I would unplug any USB devices and if you have a wifi card installed, disable that as well for a while.

Did you perform a fresh install or an upgrade install?

I had one problem when I went to 8 on the desktops: one of the windows updates conflicted with my Asus board and killed the USB controller. System restore from the cd drive rolled it back, and installing logmein helped to work around the problem. Ultimately disabling that specific update was all that was required. Discovered the solution through google, which quickly zeroed in on which problematic update it was

Hit up system restore and roll back to before you installed your initial system update if possible, to rule out the possibility. Asus and asrock are peas in the same pod

Hi folks, I have an old Dell laptop with an Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo processor. I recently upgraded to Win 8 (32 bit) and now I am having sound problems too. On the advice of an earlier post I ran LatencyMon and this is the error message:

"Your system appears to be having trouble handling real time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as dropouts, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running on your system appear to be executing for too long. At least one detected problem appears to be network related. In case you are using a WLAN adapter, try disabling it to get better results. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling in control panel and BIOS setup. Check for Bios updates."

Problem is, I haven't a clue what any of this means!! Can anyone translate and suggest a fix please :)
