Have a 08 VW Passat 2.0 TDI. I've been away for last couple of months and wife was driving car. When I got back the car is making a whining sound on acceleration. Is this a sign the turbo is on the way out?..I'm assuming it is the turbo

Hard to know what the whining sound is but your best bet is to check all the filters to make sure they are clean as a blocked filter can put serious pressure on the Turbo.

So it's possible that this whine is simply a blocked filter?

Im not a mechanic but i have a turbo deisel for the last 5 years and at first i didnt clean the filters. As soon as i replaced the filters the car performed a lot better. Also the egr should be cleaned if your car has one as these are prone to blockage due to soot

You can also check for a split in the pipes after the turbo, check the interCooler for cracks. Take the pipe off the outlet of the turbo if it can be reached easily and check for movement on the turbine.
