Why is it that a shop like dealz will stock this but not tesco?

Do they get it specially imported or what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭T-Maxx

Used to be 4 for €1.49.

I think they have GB stickers printed on them. Used by them once a week when it was 4 for €1.49.

Local discount shop near me has Spanish normal coca cola. Makes no sense. How can it be cheaper to import from Spain?

Not saying it's the case here, but sometimes food/drink items are close to Use By / Sell By dates.

Also, the Spanish cola may have been produced here or in UK for export to Spain.

I don't like the shop anymore. You have to be on your guard buying stuff there because it might be smaller than other shops, lighter or actually more expensive. I don't think the shop is amazing value anymore because I started noticing things.

They have these healthy crisps at €1.49 and they are €1.75 in tesco but tesco have 6 in the bag and deals have 4. Without looking you assume deals is better but in fact you get less for your money.

Oh and those tacky Irish flag bags. No thanks.

True of any of the price point shops. Up to the shopper in any case.

Some stuff is good value in dealz, some isn't. Just use your sense.

5 cans is still €2 in euro giant.

Yep those 49 cent selection boxes in January were awesome. Plus they are opening upstairs in the Henry St branch again soon, so possibly some brand new stock.

They sell 1.5l of this in the Dealz on Henry St, Dublin, that worked out cheaper (IIRC it was €1.49). But then I found a tray of 8 cans in a BOGOF deal in Iceland in the Ilac that worked out €1/litre, so try there if you're in Dublin.

That's how they work. Have a look at this Dispatches documetary on them.

I wondered where they came from.

I didn't want to make reference to that documentary because I couldn't find a link to it and you know what the natives are like in here. :D

    What did they say?
Is it 3 cans for a pound in poundland or is it just as Micks getting shafted as usual?

I doubt they care, it's how the company operates. Currency fluctuations have a huge impact on their bottom line, so they constantly change packaging to reduce the content.

No cheaper than Tesco. Pack of 6 cans in Tesco €3. Pack of four Snickers €1.37 in Tesco last time I checked. 3 for €1.49 in dealz. Do they think the public are stupid?

Store manager actually agreed with me. Said it came from head office but can't see it lasting as sales have gone down loads.
It was one of the main draws to the store for people, who would then browse around and pick up some more stuff. That doe not happen anymore (as much).

Any Tesco I've been too they are normally €3.50 - €4 for a six pack of coke.

Dunnes and tesco do offers often enough, I believe it is 18 for 8 euro at the moment in dunnes, or 12 for 6 euro in tesco. I would already be shopping in those place already so would make very little sense to go to dealz.
I do hope they change back though!

Yes, it is often intended for different markets and are grey area imports, like the €2 shops.

The manufacturer can have very different wholesale prices. You usually see people blaming the end retailer for ripping people off, when the country/place selling it cheaper could be making higher profits.

My eurospar often has 5% and 4.3% heineken alongside each other, both brewed in holland, the 5% is cheaper, its intended for the scottish market and presumably they get it cheaper since heineken charge less in that market.

The aviva stadium here threatened to import guinness kegs from the UK as it ended up cheaper -with all above board vat & duty.

This is about Cherry Coke not normal Coke. I've not seen Cherry Coke anywhere other than Dealz.

Boots and Superdrug have always had them. Normal priced contours but Dealz is cheaper for 1.25ltr of course which the other two don't have.

I think you can get it in Iceland as well but I don't have one near me so can't be sure.

i think the point is that it used to be 4 for €1.50, i thought i was the only one who hasnt bothered with dealz since they start messing with the prices.

3 for 1.49 is till good when you consider Spar and Mace and the like are charging 1.10 for ONE.

A lady was telling me recently that she went into a pizza place with her family (located right across the road from dealz in Midleton co. Cork) and ordered a coke each with their pizzas.
They came down with cans of coke and were charged €3 for each one.

The Cherry Coke is good stuff :-) used to buy it all the time when it was 4 for €1.49 in Dealz. You can still get 4 cans of Pepsi for €1.49 I buy it but don't drink it very often. I have noticed a good few price increases in Dealz, Santry.

If you are looking for the diet cherry coke you can get the 500ml bottles in Boots stores. I think they have 2 for €2.20 at the moment.

And the other guys point is that this is still relatively cheap. I remember lads in the ripoff forum moaning about donuts going up "50% overnight" or something, then they admitted they were still dirt cheap, they only used the percentage since the increase was so small it would have shown them up.

Some people like to bite their nose off though.

In another thread people were complaining that the pepsi max tasted different, as it was the UK market one.

I see tesco now specifically labelling northern ireland coke. The poster earlier was correct coke is 18 for 8 in tesco now.

Its dear, but people are willing to pay €2.80+ in pubs for 200ml, so I expect many will pay €3 for 330ml in a restaurant.
