rear cassette slipping on hub

Had a problem Sunday where the cassette was slipping on the hub. First I thought the chain was slipping, but it became more common and then at one stage completely disengaged from the wheel. I took the wheel off, and couldn't find anything wrong, and was able to make it home.

Have no confidence to go for long cycle now. Do I need new cassette or hub? Hard to get to lbs this week so wondering is there anything I can check myself.
Bike is Scott s40, with tiagra rear mech, and sram 9 speed cassette.

    Any advice or tips?

Sounds like your freewheel it gone. Shouldn't be a biggy for your LBS to change it or if you're so way inclined look up changing a freewheel on YouTube and DIY.

It was seriously cold on Sunday. Could be water in the freehub freezing. Strip, clean and lube the freehub might sort it out.

+1 Or the grease in the hub gets sticky in colder conditions preventing the pawls engaging. Temperatures like Sunday's are rare enough here but if this is regular for you I would be inclined to put a lighter grease or oil in there.

Thanks for replies - I think freewheel is gone as its slightly slipping even inside the house. Will bring to LBS when I get the chance.

Don't ride the bike with it like this. The intermittent loss of drive followed by the drive coming back with a bang will strip the thread on either the hub or the cassette.

Something similar happened to me...sounds like the pawls in the freehub have worn down, most lbs' should be able to take care of this, it'll probably be about 20-30 euro for the repair

If the freewheel ever goes, to any one out and about you can cable tie or some wire from the cassette to the spokes to get u home, tried and tested
