What type of key is it?the older 3 button or the newer square shape?,take it apart and have a look at the button itself,it's most likely sticking, every couple of months mine older type needs to be cleaned to get it working properly.

So I opened the fob, removed the key, now tell me does the circuit board bit come out and how

There is a black bit of plastic covering the circuit board you'll see it's held in place by the plastic bit,I just used a bit of force and it came off the circuit board will come out then and you'll be able to check the button that's causing the problem it should be moving up and down freely,if it's not I don't know what you'll do,you'll pick up a fob easily enough on e-bay and all the info to program it without going near a dealer is easily available.

Buy the Keyfob & swap over the key shaft & PATs chip from the old key,
    no cutting or programming involved,Easy

only the Central locking of course,;)

Opened the key up with the same result
