Would You Do Your Own Soil Testing?

it isnt rocket science but are you going to take your time and do it properly or are you just going to lash reagents in and hope for the best? are you a patient type of persont that will recheck tests to make sure they're right and not rush the job. If not you're probably better off sending samples off.

I doubt you'd make much of a saving getting it TBH

It was really cost and accuracy that I was getting at. I'd follow the "If it's worth doing it's worth doing right" way. I was wondering if there were people out there who tested themselves and was it any good

I recently did soil sampling on our farm as it hadn't been done for a number of years. I did a bit of research into these test kits initially as I thought it would be handy to do them myself but from what I can gather these kits are not really very reliable and there can be huge variation in results. Even the fact that they include a nitrogen test is not very reassuring since its not something that any professional soil testing lab will test for as it is so changable in the soil.

In the end I got the testing done by southern scientific services in Kerry @ €18 per sample for Phosprorus,, Potassium and pH test. It was very handy, they posted out the sample boxes and information sheets and you take the soil cores yourself, fill up the boxes and post them back. I had my results within a week.:)
