Hi all just wondering does anyone know of any mechanics who will call out with you to check the validity of a car, Dublin area. And if so what price ?

If it were me, I would pop out to see the car yourself and see if you are happy with it. And then take it from there. Once the seller knows you're interested they may well be happy to take the car to get a quick check over by your mechanic.

No point going out with a mechanic, if you're not sure you want to buy the car imo.

The last car I bought, the dealer was more than happy to drive the car out to my mechanic.

Numerous cosmetic issues noted, fixed & then brought back to my mechanic to verify.

Along with a cartell check, cost me around €100.
Money well spent. Other than wear and tear, car has only cost me servicing since. And its an Alfa ;)

And I'd echo Alan's advice, check the car yourself first. Have a look at the buying a 2nd hand car thread.

Edit - what car and where in Dublin?
    Happy to give a recommendation.

Thanks for your reply. The car I'm looking at is at a dealers. Would it be common for dealers to agree to you taking the car to get looked at by a mechanic?

They may require the mechanic to collect it, for insurance cover, or could deliver. Or they might want a decent deposit, make sure it's subject to inspection.

If they won't it's a good reason to walk away.

I can't see them having a problem with it, if they're going to stand behind the car, any inspection should be welcome. If not, then leave them off tbh.

    I do! :)

He's based in North County Dublin and charges €50/60 depending where the car is.

Used him twice, first time he told me to walk away, second time he thought it was a good buy, which it seems to be. He also checked out all the paperwork and made sure everything was above board there as well. Best money I've spent in a long while.

PM me if you want his number.

Can anyone recommend me a mechanic in the Dundrum, Rathfarnham area to check a ickle car for me. Unlike the OP this is a private sale and all I know is petrol goes in here and it moveth forward by combustible magic.

I have read the buying a used car thread, not all of it mind.

    Cheers.
