What would you do?

Right, I assume most of us know when to go into a yellow box junction but what I'm asking is what would you really do in this situation, not what should you do?

Waiting at lights, 2nd in queue. Only one lane. Either you can go left or you can go to an offset right. Light goes green. First car is going to offset right and ends up in the yellow box. You can either go (a) straight into the box and hope to god the lights that the queue in front of you are waiting at go green so that you dont hold up traffic coming from the offset right street or (b) stay where you are and wait until it's clear and you definitely won't be blocking anyone apart from people behind wishing to go left?

What I did today was wait at the lights. Had a lot of horns blown at me from some ould wan in the car behind but tbh that's what I assumed most people would do? I only managed to go just as the light was orange as the cars ahead moved forward about 2 car lengths so I wouldn't block anyone.

So yeah, what would you honestly, really, actually, truthfully do...?

    Just out of curiosity.

Would appreciate if some people didn't call me a nuisance or an annoying f*cker or something because I wouldn't move on :) Seen that all too often on Boards

Id like to think that I wouldnt block the yellow box. Who cares what some dickhead behind you thinks? Ive had people blow the horn at me because I had the cheek to not turn right on a red filter light.

Same as you, don't enter the junction. If the driver behind blows too much and I'm not in a particular hurry I might have to make sure no bit of my car could possibly be in the box once I enter it.

OP what you did was correct, don't mind the ignorant f*ckers behind you who clearly have no clue about the ROTR.

I think all drivers should join up to Boards, seems to help driving :P .. I was actually expecting at least a third of people to be saying they'd drive into the junction from what I've seen through my time at that junction, and many others like it. Nice to see people actually have concern for other road users :D

I've disagreed with you before OP but i would have done the same as you in this case. Have you a Google Streetview link just so we can see the junction?

If you know the pattern of the lights and that they will go green I would go ahead. There's a similar junction down the road from me. The box is for people turning out of a chemist car park on the left. It's a judgment call but if noone is looking to pull out I would go ahead knowing the lights will go green in about 20 seconds. If I don't know the pattern I would wait and let everyone behind me honk away.

    Map
    Hope that works :L

Heh heh I've disagreed and agreed with you before I believe ;)

The light sequence is unpredictable as a backlog usually occurs at the next set of lights due to people going right so sometimes the box junction won't clear for a good 30 to 40 seconds after the other peoples lights go green. And if a lorry comes to junction and someone is anyway in the junction at all, all hell breaks loose! They cut it tight enough normally like

EDIT: Haven't a monkeys how to get a streetview pic :(

    RE-EDIT: Yay! I got it! :D

I would be wondering what you're waiting for there to be honest and in my experience most people would pull ahead and free up the traffic behind there's plenty of space in that junction.

There was 2 cars in the yellow box before me though (Well 1 and a half really) so if I happened to go into it as well and any truck came near the junction as they very so often do due to it being a kinda central junction in town, they would have no where to go. It's a rotten junction at times because of the next set is only a couple yards beyond and if there is more than 2 or 3 cars in a row turning right then no one can get past due to parked cars on the left

But it looks like there's a good bit of space there. Can you not pull forward and right without going into the box, freeing up the traffice turning left from behind ?

Pulled up to the box but couldn't move to the right due to some twonk parking his van fairly badly on my right so drivers coming against me had to take a wider line.

Usually that would work unless you drive a big van or something longer though

Sounds like you did all you could under the circumstances. Yellow boxes serve a purpose but there are a minority of times where it makes sense to pull into them for a very short period to keep traffic moving. Without knowing this junction and the light sequence I would be waiting on a clear route but I can understand why some people behind would be frustrated.

I can understand their frustration but making a fuss won't help :P It's a weird sequence because it doesn't works out perfectly a lot of the time. I remember seeing one line of people stuck in the box while cars tried to drive around them in all ways. Horns and fingers galore. Couldn't help but chuckle tbh... I'm a sad guy :(

A yellow box is a legal requirement not to drive into it. But you shouldn't really enter a junction unless you can clear it, unless turning right when only one vehicle can enter and block the junction.

Getting the traffic flowing from one direction can cause issues for the other roads into the junction. If the lights are causing delays you need to contact the relevant council to get the sequence altered.
