Wiring of 12N plug for trailer lights

    Hi
I'm looking for some help please!

I've tried to wire new LED lights to my car trailer. I've replaced everything - wiring, lighting units, 12N plug, the lot! Everything working OK, except for indicators! The trouble is only when the tail lights, brake lights and indicators are on at same time! The left/right indicators start to blink faster than normal, as if a bulb is blown!! When tail lights are switched off, the problem disappears! Similarly, when tail lights and indicators are on, there's no problem.
I should also mention that when towing at night (ie tail lights on) my car gives me an error message every time I hit the brake pedal - "Indicator lamp(s) faulty". I drive a Peugeot 407.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?? (no pun intended!) I suspect it is to do with the earthing, but I'm not sure.

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the problem lies with the towing vehicle electrics. Was a bypass relay fitted when the towbar was fitted and wired?

If you're confident the trailer is wired right, have you tried plugging into another cars' towbar electric socket, and see if the problem manifests itself then, too ? If so, trailer is at fault - if not, could be issue with the car's socket wiring.

Bear in mind, switching to LED light units can cause issues sometimes, due to the very low capacitance of LED's. I have heard of people leaving in one std bulb, hidden & wired, to avoid flasher units going nuts wrt LED units.

    This should sort it out.

    This should sort it out.

Thanks a mill for all your help.

So I connected the trailer to another car - it worked perfect!
Also connected my car to another trailer with LED lights and all the lights were flickering! Problem is obviously with may car so!

Now, forgive my ignorance here. I'm at the limit if my capability on this - but what does that transistor thing do, and how/where should it be installed???

    Thanks again folks!

    Yay :D

You don't need the transistor if it works on other cars I'd imagine.

I'd say there's just a fundamental problem with the socket on the car. Damaged or incorrect wiring is where I'd start.

Do you have the socket wired through a bypass relay or just spliced into the tail lights? A 407 really needs the relays to avoid issues like this. You risk doing damage to your BSI otherwise. Any half-modern car with bulb out warnings must have relays fitted, or else go to the dealer to have the factory 12N harness fitted if it was available.

You don't need to spend a fortune on a kit either like some sellers suggest, I made a relay kit for my last car by using 4 standard automotive relays. The only thing it needed was a permanent live brought back from the front. Cost me €8 I think and about 20 mins to fit.

The resistor posted above won't help you, that's used for adding load onto a flasher relay if you replace your indicators with LED bulbs to stop the rapid flashing of a bulb out.
