    Afternoon all :),

Just seeking some building advice on placement of a cattle grid. I have a 3.3 metre wide entrance with two 3 metre high large old stone pillars either side that don't have a foundation as they were built way back.

i am wondering how to place a cattle grid so the cows wont skirt around the grid or the grid if placed too close to the wall / pillars won't undermine the foundation.
The pillars are about 500mm on each side.
Also why is there a need for a deep pit under the grid?
    Thanks
