    Hi Guys,

I'm looking for some help with regards to the quality of this road bike. I'm struggling to find anything online about the bike except ads for the sale of it. Anybody ever used one or owns one and could provide some feedback? I'm looking to buy one advertised on adverts but I was looking up a Mercurio RA5 road bike rather then the Mercur 90 when I made the offer. They could be the same bike for all I know but I would really appreciate some feedback.

    Thanks.

90 and io are very near each other on the keyboard?

That could well be the case alright, good thinking. I've asked the advertiser for the make and model of the bike and explained that I couldn't find much on a mercur 90.

    From a quick google.
It has down tube shifters. Went out of fashion in the mid 90's.
7 speed block on the back. Went out of fashion in the late 90's

It'll do a job for you as a run around, but it is the bottom end of bikes. It wouldn't be ideal if you are taking up the sport of cycling. There won't be much information on this brand as they are basically supermarket bikes and not great quality at all. There will be no website. Usually some place (like a garden centre) buys a batch of these bikes on the cheap and flogs them in a big glut. Then you never hear of them again and they occasionally pop up on second hand sites and in skips.

A Carrera from Halfords would be a better bet or something second hand (if you know what you're looking at).

Right so it's no the bike I thought it was.... thanks for the info.

It's going to be my second bike. For cycling around town and leaving locked up in and around town as my current bike is too expensive to get stolen so I am uncomfortable chaining it up.

I've offered 180 for this bike. Is that a reasonable price?

That's a complex question. I wouldn't want it at all so it's hard for me to price objectively. I think it is worth a fair bit less than that.

If it is a fully functional runaround that you don't have to put any money into and you are happy to pay the price then it is worth it to you.

Maybe someone else could chime in with an opinion? I could be wrong.

I also wouldn't pay that either. I would pay that a similar raleigh with good reynolds tubing and in good condition, but not for this quality of bike.

Granted, we know little of the actual bike, but with it being that old and being cheap in the first place we can probably safely assume that the bottom bracket, headset and pedal bearing are probably shot and need to be regreased at the very least. Brake pad, tyres, chain, may all need to be replaced, so while it seems good value right now, it probably isn't.

If you keep looking you can get something decent for around 200 second hand. I got the OH a carrera virtusso for €200 a few years back. Still running grand.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. If I wanted a 90's bike with 90's technology I'd buy a 2nd hand steel bike from the 90's. And it would be better built all round. (probably).

Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated. I've decided to go for a different bike in the end.
