Hi There, looking for a bit of guidance.

Using Outlook 2010 and I keep getting emails that look like they are coming from my email address that I'm not sending. Normally they are about investing in some property deal someplace. The sender name on the dodgy mails comes up in the from field in my inbox as my email address i.e myfirstname@companydomainname.

However if I send myself an email it comes up in the inbox as my first name and last name.

If I go to reply to the dodgy email it comes up with my correct e mail address in the 'to field'.

Is this a virus or someone 'masking' the name they are sending under

I have ESET Nod 32 as anti virus and running on Windows 7 home premium

    thanks

    Hope I'm reading this correctly...

In the email message, click on tags tab and look at the internet header.

copy and paste it into notepad or something you can read and run through to see the IP address and source mail address the mail is really coming from.

    Hi Thomasm,

This could just be typical spam. However if you want you can send the exported mail (in .txt or .eml format) to support (at) eset.ie and we can take a look for you.

    Some info on exporting emails:

The address you see on an email is just text added by the sending 'server'

It's exactly the same as you writing a return address on an envelope when you post a letter. If you want a return to sender you write your own address. If you don't care where a reply goes then can write any address you like.

In the olden days stuff like this usually meant that someone else's PC was infected with a virus that sent spam. Because if you had ever sent them an email the virus could see your address in their address book. Just classic misdirection.

And spammers should serve one additional second in prison for every email they cause to be sent.

    Hi Thomasm,
It might be possible that your Outlook data file has been infected with some malware. Scan your mailbox with an antivirus as it can sort out the issue.

    Regards :
    Jane
