Finding draughts

    HI,
We just got an attaic conversion done and it is a bit colder than I thought. One reason is because it is a new house and there is 300 mm rock wool above the bedrooms so no heat comes up. That said, I went with recommended Kingspan insulation for roof and walls - which cost a fair bit and U values are very low.

We have an electric heater on the go up there which is something I am not happy about - anyway, I saw this gizmo on amazon...

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Decker-TLD100-Thermal-Detector/dp/B0044R87BE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1361872832&sr=8-2

Which might help find out places where there is a lack of air tightness. I know I should have used this while the conversion was still being done but I was thinking of getting one anyway. Are they any use?

    Thanks.

A couple of areas are the skylights,(if installed), another area is the jack wall or end wall, as the stairs rises into the attic the wall has sometimes very little insulation on it as it would overhang the stair threads. Also if you have recesses behind the new attic room walls ensure the insulation is secured in place and no gaps have been left. As im guessing this has been plastered finished its hard to ensure all insulation is correctly installed as you would have seen a noticeable change to temp and drafts as the room was insulated. Once this was done then u plasterboard. Hope u get a few results.

It's hard to beat a candle.
Move round the joints and it flickers at the slightest draught.
I'm presuming that works in the IR principal and drop in temperature rather that finding am actual draught?
