    hey there,

first time poster over this side and looking for asssistance, the ceiling on our en suite bathroom seems to have started peel off the paint, i have never painted a ceiling in a bathroom before, i presumed it was not primed beforehand properly, if anybody would have any advice on how to go about it or what primer or paint at a budget price to use i would appreciate it?

    thanks guys

    Hi Ger,
Best paint for bathrooms is Perma-White made by zinsser
    http://www.zinsseruk.com/product/perma-white-interior/
Unfortunately it cost around 35-40 for 2,5litres.
U need to scrape off all loose paint , fill all edges and paint over with above paint. U might come across paint start bubbling when u start painting it, it means that current paint is not properly stuck to plaster and more scrapping is needed. My advise is try to scrape as much paint as possible.

As said scrape off all the loose paint first. As it's an Ensuite which are quite small it's probably worth your while to also sand the ceiling down using a Mouse sander. ( don't forget to use a Mask ) go or talk to someone like MRCB
in Dublin who will recommend a good sealer and paint suitable for your purpose.
I remember buying special Bathroom paint from a large multiple diy store. Wasn't worth a sh... It used to run down the Walls when you took a hot shower. So be careful what you use.

Just scrap off old paint and use bathroom paint that you get any where.
It's just the moisture in the air thats peeling old paint off, no big deal , just get paint that is suitable for bathrooms.
Don't buy cheap paint , its not worth it . Dulex is the best , i find.
No need for special primer, just use two coats.

For best results you will have to go back to the plaster or skim. Coat the ceiling with a couple of coats of polybond and then 2/3coats of emulsion (good quality). As prev poster mentioned, this will fix problem but wont prevent it happening again unless u install an extractor or vent to take away moisture while showering etc. Also ensure u have sufficient insulation above the ceiling here as it will reduce the condensation if its well insulated.

you are all a great help guys, i really appreciate it.

small question..would the roller be much better to use than a brush say, i would imagine it would be more even and slightly less work but would there be any other advantage than that?(the patch to re paint is only a square foot.

    cheers again

Cut in (do the edges) with brush and main area with roller. 2 coats. job done.

As said use a Brush to cut in where the Walls and Ceiling meet. But as the area is so small you might be best using a small 4 inch roller which is normally used for behind Radiators. You will waste to much paint using a large Roller.

Brush , small area use a brush. Easier.

How exactly do you make that out?

You will see the Brush strokes on the Ceiling with a Brush. A small Roller is the way to go. Cheaper than a good quality Brush. Doesn't soak up too much paint. And just throw away when your finished. Job Done

A square foot ! Brush will do it less messy , if use roller you have to pour into tray.
But do use good quality brush , 2/3 inch one spend around €5.

Aldi had the 2 rollers a roller Arm a Tray today for 2.99e
Here is a Trick I use for the Tray, especially for small jobs. Wrap the Tray in a plastic supermarket bag. Pour your paint in, use it on the job then pour whats left back into the Can. Throw the Bag and Roller head away. No mess no cleaning Brushes Job done, Brownie points earned from herself and sit down and watch the Golf or Football.

Use zinseer anti mould and mildew paint. It is brilliant for bathrooms.

But most importantly either put a vent in the bathroom or open a window during and after showers.

    Hi y'all....

I have tried painting the en-suite in our house now 5 times in 8 years....

There is good ventilation, door is always left open as is the window whenever we shower, and we still getting fecking mould...
Have tried polybonding the walls and ceiling and use specialist bathroom paint.... and done it twice on all occasions....

Am thinking about putting up a tongue and groove cladding on the ceiling.....

Any thoughts on this or perhaps a better way to stop the mould appearing....

Cheers for that Michael.... I appreciate it.....

So never use glue in bathrooms, gotcha....

What about Zinnser, dies that come in different colors, or do I simply use the white one and then print over it with the color of my choice?

You do realise that polybond is actually pva?
