Need some advice coz I’m bricking it. And I know I need a dentist.

I haven’t been in 9 years. It was 12 years before that. Have an awful, awful fear of the dentist since I woke up in the middle of a dental treatment in hospital at 6 or 7 years of age covered in blood. The last time I went, a tooth broke during an extraction.

Anyway, I have one tooth that is rotting and will have tocome out. I’ve been resigned to that for 2-3 years. I also have the remains of the broken tooth sitting above the gum line. However, this morning I felt something weird at the bottom of my front tooth and when in the car, part of the tooth, at the gumline, came away. Do people think this tooth can be saved?

Time for me to man up and make an appointment but I’m terrified I’ll lose the front one.

If anyone can recommend a phobia friendly dentist in the south Dublin (Dublin 14) area, I'd me much obliged.

I was like you. Had a bad experience years ago and avoided going to the dentist for way too long. Ended up needing loads of work done. All I can tell you is that dentistry has changed over the years and my treatment was totally painless. Get whatever you need done asap. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is.

i'm not sure if anyone will be able recommend a dentist on the forums - however if I were you - I'd just ring around the area your in and see what dentist can take you as soon as possible - this evening or the morning if you can still get an appointment
Try not to think about it too much - in my experience they are all fairly nice and fairly phobia aware these days. Unlike some medical professions - all of them I've come in contact seem to have fairly decent people skills and are determined not to cause any discomfort or pain. The first visit is going to be all about damage control - which sounds like you need as soon as possible. You can always change dentists once you've gone once - I wouldn't wait though to pick one - just get an appointment as soon as possible.

I've just been to the dentist btw - and came on the forum to check some things. I kept putting it off and off and before I knew it years had gone past - i have lots of work to get done - however I'll tell you you'll will breathe a huge sign of relief once you have the first visit over you - sooner you do it the better.
Remember in the end of the day you are the one in control - you can always bite them if things are going badly (only joking on the last part :-) )

Thanks for the replies. Went on Friday and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. Not by a long shot. In fact, it was as good as it could have been.

Turned out I hadn't chipped the front one at all. Instead I needed one out (which I knew anyway, it was falling apart), the root removed and a clean. Had the one out yesterday and it was not too bad. My body was shaking like mad but I had to tell myself to feel what I was actually feeling and not what I thought I might/should be feeling (if that makes sense). Truth is there was very little pain at all.

Dentist is in the Celbridge area and was fantastic (or has been so far) so I'd highly recommend him. If anyone wants details, PM me.

Finished my treatment last Friday. Two extractions (one was the removal of an old root), one filling and a clean. Relieved it is over but I've been stressing about it for 8 years and, to be honest, it was grand. Not pleasant, at times it was uncomfortable although not really painful and it was nowhere near how bad I had built it up to be.

Have to say, the dentist was absolutely first class so if anyone has similar fears, PM me and I'll send details.
