Mk4 Golf Thermostat Problem

Think I might have a problem with the thermostat in my golf, mk4 tdi!
It doesn't really get fully up to temperature, she gets about half way between the cold and the 90deg mark! If I'm stopped up for a few minutes she'll get fullyup to temperature, but when I drive on again the temperature goes right down again! Also if I turn on the hot air blower the temp goes down to almost fully cold!
Does this sound like a thermostat problem or could anyone point me in another direction??

Definitely sounds like the thermostat yes. They often stick open on the Mk4 Golfs.

Cheers George! Is replacing it a DIY job? I'm an aircraft mechanic myself so I'd have no problem tackling it as long as no fancy tools are needed!

No fancy tools needed, the housing is held on with 2 bolts. Access is a bit awkward but not too bad. It is best to get a genuine VW thermostat, housing and o-ring. Re-using the old housing often results in leaks soon after doing the job.
